The 36-year-old recently announced his transition from full-time MXGP racing to a new role within the KTM family at a special event in Rome on September 14, 2021.
Cairoli, who started his Grand Prix career in 2004 and won nine world championships – two in MX2 and seven in the premier MXGP class – is statistically among the most successful athletes in the history of the sport. He currently has 93 overall wins and has celebrated six of his crowns with KTM machines.
Cairoli was the dominant MXGP figure of the 10s and he led the division between 2009 and 2014, then triumphed again in 2017. He remains in contention for the 2021 title for what could be his 15th top three finish in a championship campaign.
Infront Motor Racing has officially retired the # 222 – which Cairoli has worn regularly since 2007 – from the FIM Motocross of Nations and in a surprise ceremony honoring Tony’s amazing career. No rider other than Tony Cairoli will be able to drive the # 222 in MXGP competition in the future.
Pit Beirer, Director of KTM Motorsport: âWe have been privileged to be a part of Tony’s history since 2010. We know how much we appreciate him as a person and as one of the best drivers that the sport has seen, and it’s special that the rest of MXGP feels the same with this retirement from their number. # 222 belongs to Tony. He owned MXGP for a while when he changed the game and brought so much domination to the championship. He took it to a new level for runners while showing a passion for racing that has allowed him to have such a long and incredible career. Thanks to Infront Motor Racing and the FIM for making this gesture. It’s not often a remarkable athlete like Tony who shows up.
Giuseppe Luongo, President of Infront Motor Racing: âAntonio has made a great contribution to MXGP history, not only with his many titles but also with his demeanor, respect and fairness. He is an example for all young riders. Antonio will be missed on the race track, but I hope he will not be missed in our world where he will continue to offer his experience and knowledge to the next generations. Antonio, thank you for everything you have given and you continue to offer in motocross.
