Tesla Roadster Sold For Over $250,000, A New Record For The Original Electric Sports Car Now Rising In Value

An original Tesla Roadster sold for over $250,000, in a new record as Tesla’s very first car gains value as a collectible.

That’s more than Tesla expects to sell the next-generation Roadster.

Tesla Roadster

The Tesla Roadster was the first car from the now famous Texan automaker: a small two-seater sports car based on the Lotus Elise.

It was far from a successful vehicle program by most conventional standards. It was late, had a difficult rollout with numerous production issues that led to changes, and only about 2,400 units were delivered during its roughly four-year production run between 2008 and 2012.

But it was a success for Tesla because it achieved its main goals. The Roadster changed people’s perception of what electric cars can be and helped launch or accelerate several other electric vehicle programs.

With an EPA range of 393 kilometers (244 miles) with the first Li-ion battery in a production car, 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 201 km/h (125 mph) , it redefined electric vehicles as more than a glorified golf cart.

In the future, when all new cars are electric, we’ll probably look back to the Tesla Roadster as the vehicle that sparked the auto industry’s electric revolution.

Tesla Roadster value

Due to its place in electric vehicle history, some in the industry have speculated that the original Tesla Roadster could become a popular collector car and rise in value.

In 2020, we reported that some people were testing the market with a Tesla Roadster that would sell for $1.5 million.

However, we also reported at the time that the original Roadster didn’t seem to gain in value based on the listings, which showed a price range of $50,000 to $70,000, about half the price of the original. origin of the car.

Last year, we were starting to see a shift in Roadster prices with Gruber Motor Company, an electric vehicle store specializing in Tesla Roadsters, reporting that some vehicles were selling for between $120,000 and $182,000 at auction.

This seems to indicate that the original Roadster is gaining in value.

The value seems to be rising as the electric vehicle revolution takes hold and more and more people realize the Roadster’s place within it.

It also increases as the vehicle becomes rare. As previously reported, Tesla only produced about 2,400 of these, but there are far fewer on the road today.

Sure, several were lost in crashes, but Tesla also bought back several cars for parts to service other vehicles.

Gruber themselves unwittingly contributed to the shortage as the company suffered two fires which destroyed many Roadsters.

A fire in 2017 destroyed at least five Roadsters and another more recent incident in October 2021 resulted in the loss of 31 Roadsters.

It’s hard to determine how many Tesla Roadsters are left, but it wouldn’t be surprising if there were less than 2,000 units.

Roadster sells for over $250,000

Electrek spoke to Pete Gruber of Gruber Motor Company this week and he said Roadster sales are picking up.

The company has a portal to list Roadsters for sale and it says they have sold six in the last three months alone.

Prices are also rising.

Gruber said a Roadster recently cost $190,000, a new record, but the record didn’t last long.

Someone ended up listing a VIN013 Roadster very early in 2008 with extremely low odometer readings of just 840 miles.

Gruber suspected that the combination of low mileage and low VIN would generate a lot of interest and suggested the owner put a high “fishing price” on it.

The owner settled for $250,000.

A few days after the vehicle listing was posted on Gruber’s portal, the owner received several offers above the asking price and he ended up selling for over $250,000 – although the owner would not confirm the final price.

The company posted a video about the new record sale:

As Gruber noted, that’s not only record value for a sale of the original Roadster, but it’s actually more money than Tesla is asking for the new next-gen Roadster.

ElectrekJamie Dow, of , is also currently posting his original Roadster on Gruber’s portal – although he’s asking for a lower price as he’s put far more miles on his.
