Supercross motorcycle racing takes over Gillette Stadium

America’s most extreme sport returns to Gillette Stadium this weekend as dozens of elite off-road riders compete in the Monster Energy Supercross Championship Series.

The last Supercross race at Foxborough was in 2018, and the athletes, including this year’s winner Marvin Musquin, are eager to return.

“We’re back and this season has been great,” Musquin, 32, told the Herald. “We had a big crowd in 2018. Supercross needs to have fans and a full stadium.”

Credit its name, Supercross is the most pumped-up motocross racing competition out there, with around 20 riders racing through a twisty, jump-filled course in a five-minute, plus one-lap heat. The top nine riders compete in the main event, where they can rack up points for a season championship. There are 17 rounds in the National Touring Series, and Foxborough is round 15.

Eli Tomac, 29, is eyeing the chance to clinch his second championship in three seasons on Saturday. His main opponent is Jason Anderson, winner of the last round in Atlanta.

“A few things have to go my way. I have to beat Jason if we are both on the podium. A lot is at stake,” Tomac told the Herald.

Fans attending Supercross for the first time can expect high-flying races where riders soar through the air by flipping their bikes sideways or raising their handlebars.

It’s not the most popular extreme sport in this part of the country, but at least one Northeast rider is competing and excited to grow the sport.

“I’m looking forward to this race,” said Justin Barcia, 30, from Monroe, New York. “I grew up riding here a bit. It’s very exciting for me to be here racing. Fans here have always loved riding motorcycles, and there are plenty of trails and tracks here. It’s definitely a breeding ground for the East Coast.

Tickets for Supercross are on sale for $25 each, according to Ticketmaster. Qualifying races will begin at 9:00 a.m. and competitive heats will begin around 3:00 p.m. NBC and NBC-owned Peacock will air and broadcast the races.

After Foxborough, the riders will continue to Denver for round 16, and finally, race the world championship in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 7.
