NEW ULM — Competitors in motorcycle hillclimbs from near and far conquered — or tried to conquer — the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club Hillclimb Sunday.

Participants included Jason Braun, 44, of Sleepy Eye, who won the two-stroke event and placed high in the 600 and master (over 40) event.

The hill, with two jumps, is over 200 feet long from base to summit. Bigger bikes get up the hill in seconds. Most competitors climbed the hill without falling. A few lost traction and spun.

Braun rode up the hill on a two-stroke motorcycle in just seconds. He recently won the masters division at a national hill climb event in Michigan and said his result qualifies him to compete professionally.

Jason does not plan to turn professional.

“It’s too expensive,” he said.

He spoke about the Michigan National Hill Climb which featured over 400 competitors and about 30 masters division riders.

“That hill was super steep, over 350 feet long,” Brown said. “It rained all day the day before.”

Why does he do it?

“It’s about adrenaline, going up the hill,” Brown said. “Climbing can be tricky, trying to find the right track and the right gear selection.”

Jason’s son Kaden, 14, also competed in Sunday’s competition.

A four-time national hill climb champion, Jason Braun competed in motocross races and snowmobile racing at the Golden Gate Campground north of Sleepy Eye as a youth.

“I’m too old for that now. It’s a youth sport. he added. “I have to go to work Monday morning.”

He broke his legs twice and broke his collarbone during motorcycle hill climb events.

Braun delivers bulk fuel and oil to Braun Oil in Sleepy Eye. Jason said he enjoys deer hunting with his family members.

Hillclimb results will be published after they are received.

The Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club is hosting flat track races starting at noon on Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19.
