New MG Electric Car Launch Timeline Revealed; Cost less than Rs 20 Lakh

MG Motor India has confirmed that it will expand its portfolio of electric vehicles (EVs) with a new model that will arrive within the next two years. The price of the new MG electric car will be less than Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). Currently, the British automaker is selling the MG ZS EV in the price range of Rs 20.99 lakh to Rs 24.18 lakh (ex-showroom). The automaker managed to sell more than 1,300 units of the electric SUV last year.

Speaking to PTI, Rajeev Chaba, president and CEO of MG Motor India, said the company plans to introduce “more electric cars in the future” and that its second electric vehicle in India will cost less than 20 lakh Rs. Due to the second wave of Covid-19, the launch plan for the new MG electric car has been delayed for a few weeks. Given the current situation and the shortage of manufacturing materials (especially chips), the new MG electric car is expected to hit the road in two years.

For now, the British automaker has no plans to set up a new manufacturing plant in the country. Currently, it is focused on making full use of its halol plant which has a production capacity of around 1 lakh per year. Speaking of MG’s future plan, the company is preparing to launch the gasoline version of the ZS EV. Called MG Astor, the launch of the model is scheduled for the third quarter of 2021 (i.e. October to December). Here it will be placed against the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and the soon to be launched Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.

While official engine details for the MG Astor have yet to be revealed, the SUV will likely be offered with the options of a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine and 1 turbo petrol engine. 3 liter. While the naturally aspirated petrol unit will be capable of delivering 120 hp and 150 Nm of torque, the turbo engine will generate 163 hp of power and 230 Nm of torque. It can be equipped with a manual gearbox or an automatic transmission.
