Reaching the end of August means a flurry of Motocross of Nations announcements are starting to filter through. The Austrian squad was confirmed in a round of their national championship today – Lukas Neurauter, Rene Hofer and Michael Sandner will represent the nation in Mantua on September 25-26. While this trio don’t immediately jump off the page, they’re a pretty solid team. It has not yet been confirmed who will ride in which class.
Rene Hofer of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will ride in MX2 and is the team’s biggest hope for a good individual result. Hofer made his full-time debut in the FIM Motocross World Championship last season and has come close to the overall podium at times – he was ninth in the championship standings at the time of writing. Michael Sandner is another recognizable name for those who follow the Grand Prix series, as he has sometimes made it to the top ten. Twelve points have been scored by him in the MX2 class so far this year.
The Austrian team finished seventeenth in the 2019 Motocross of Nations with exactly the same trio. Hofer, who competed in the event for the first time this season, had the team’s best result, as he finished twelfth in the opening race. Austria last appeared in the top ten at the 2015 Motocross of Nations; Neurauter also raced for his nation that year. It wouldn’t be too shocking to see them return to the top ten in Mantua, especially with a handful of stars choosing to watch from the sidelines.
