Marquette BMX track busy in July | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE – The Marquette BMX track maintained its regular two-night-per-week schedule in July, with riders not only from Marquette but also from Big Bay, Gwinn and Ishpeming scoring notable achievements.

The track at the Kaufman Sports Complex on Hawley Street in North Marquette also hosted a state qualifying weekend from July 8-11. Runners converged on Marquette from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana. The bike counts – the number of races – including 28 this Thursday, 33 Friday, 51 for the Gold Cup and 57 for the state qualification.

The races will continue on Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer.

BMX, or bike motocross or bike motocross, has several BMX bikes that race on a dirt track with tight turns and hills that make events much more skill-oriented than straight sprinting.

Most races are run with runners of similar age and experience, although a few are also “open” races, allowing the different skills of the runners to compete against each other.

To contact the Marquette club, email [email protected] or call one of the trail operators, Dave Niemi, at 362-7798.

Newcomers are welcome on any regular race night, and Niemi said new runners can run for free on their first night. Although the majority of runners are teenagers and tweens, adults also participate in races organized around the age groups present that day.

Requirements are BMX bike, full face helmet (including mouth cover), long sleeve shirt, long pants and shoes.

Registration each evening takes place from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and races begin at 7 p.m. The cost is $ 5 or $ 10, depending on whether ribbons or trophies are awarded to the top placers.

Here are the results of the regular race nights at Marquette:
