Garden Ridge Community Police Plan Benefit To Help Another Officer After Motorcycle Accident

Officer Corey Hackenberg continues to recover after an accident in August nearly killed him.

SAN ANTONIO – As a six year veteran of the force, you can tell Officer Corey Hackenberg has made a difference in the town of Garden Ridge. Yet for Holly McKay, he made all the difference in her life.

“He’s just a genuine guy,” said Holly McKay, a Garden Ridge police officer. “He would support me. I would support him and trust him with my life.”

The two work as officers with the Garden Ridge Police Department. The small town, just outside of San Antonio, is emblematic of the department – united.

“We might be small, but for this small community it definitely means something,” McKay said.

This is why August 8, 2021 is hard to say or even believe.

“He had angels with him that night,” she said.

A few minutes after pointing at the police station, Hackenberg was driving home on his motorbike.

“He was heading towards I-35 and another vehicle turned out in front of him and there was no stopping. It was a very bad accident,” McKay said.

She says the officer was hit along FM 3009 and Corridor Parkway. He was hit so badly that the accident almost killed him. After several surgeries, ten days in intensive care and weeks in a hospital bed, Hackenberg returned home. McKay says his road to recovery will likely be long and possibly costly depending on what insurance doesn’t pay.

“That’s why we want to help him and do this fundraising for him so he doesn’t have to worry about the bills,” she said.

The Citizens Patrol Academy is hosting a benefit evening on Thursday, December 2 at the Blue Bonnet Palace at 17630 Lookout Road in Selma. The money raised between 5 and 8 that night will go directly to Hackenberg. This is in addition to the money already collected on a GoFundMe and First United Bank page in Garden Ridge.

“We love him and miss him. We just want him to come back here with us and we’ll do whatever we need to do to make it happen,” McKay said.
