American Motorcyclist Association and MX Sports Pro Racing Announce USA Lineup for 2022 Motocross of Nations

Justin Cooper, Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac will be looking to
Collect the Chamberlain Trophy at RedBud

MORGANTOWN, WV – August 20, 2022 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – The opening ceremonies for the GEICO Motorcycle Budds Creek National kicked off with a major announcement from Mike Pelletier, director of racing at the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and MX Sports Pro Racing, as Team USA’s three-rider lineup for the 2022 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) has been revealed with Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing’s Justin Cooper, Team Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac of Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing. The annual spectacle, affectionately referred to as the “Olympics of Motocross,” kicks off at home Sept. 24-25 from Michigan’s legendary RedBud MX, a staple of American motocross. This will mean the United States’ first appearance at the MXoN since the 2019 event.

Tomac and Sexton have been the main championship contenders this season in the 450 class and will lead Team USA in the MXGP and MX Open classes respectively. This will be Tomac’s fourth appearance representing the host nation and he will be looking to build on his experience of 2013, 2014 and 2018 as captain of the proverbial team. As one of the most decorated competitors in the history of the sport, Tomac will be looking to achieve the one achievement still missing from his resume, a victory in the Motocross des Nations. He will provide additional momentum after a win at RedBud National in July. Tomac will wear #101.

This is the first team selection for Sexton, who is in the midst of a breakout season in the Premier League as the current leader with three wins and podiums overall in the nine rounds so far. . His unparalleled consistency this summer could be a determining factor in the team’s quest for victory. He got his best RedBud result in July with a second-place finish at Nationals. Sexton will wear #103.

A strong second half of the Pro Motocross season helped Cooper earn his second team selection in the MX2 class, following his MXoN debut in 2019 in the last appearance in the United States. Continued recovery from a broken foot has resulted in a slow start to the summer for Cooper, but he has enjoyed a return to form lately with three overall podiums in the past four rounds and a pair of moto wins. Cooper will wear #102.

USA’s expected return to the MXoN will see the most successful nation in the event’s history seek a record 23rd victory. They will again be overseen by “The Man” Roger DeCoster, who will continue his tenure as manager of Team USA. After a dominant streak that saw the United States win the Chamberlain Trophy for seven straight years from 2005 to 2011, they endured a winless streak that lasted eight years. Coincidentally, the numbers the US riders will be wearing for the 2022 MXoN are the same as the roster of Ricky Carmichael, Ivan Tedesco and Kevin Windham at the 2005 event, when the US last started. their dominant winning streak.
