66-year-old man found dead after motorcycle crash in Skowhegan

SKOWHEGAN – A 66-year-old man from Skowhegan was found dead on Sunday morning after his motorcycle swerved from the road, police said.

Michael Turner crashed his motorcycle the day before near 330 Bigelow Hill Road, according to Chief David Bucknam of the Skowhegan Police Department.

Bucknam said in a telephone interview on Sunday that the crash was reported just before 8 a.m.

Turner was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and suffered a major head injury, according to Bucknam.

“A resident of Bigelow Hill Road came out of her house to go for a run,” Bucknam said. “As she was exiting the road, she noticed a motorbike in the ditch. That’s when she found out (Turner).

The investigation was underway Sunday afternoon, Bucknam said, and speed was believed to have been a factor in the single motorcycle crash. The speed limit is 40 mph in the area where the accident occurred.

“(Turner) came into a pretty tight turn on Bigelow Hill Road, lost control and it looks like he got off the road,” Bucknam said. “He hit trees and was thrown off the motorcycle, where he came to rest against a pile of stones.”

Skowhegan Constable Joshua York was the crash scene investigator, assisted by Constable Casey Dugas of the Fairfield Police Department.
